It is never appropriate to run around in lingerie and animal ears with a defense that it’s Halloween.
I’m sorry–just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean that all class and morals should be thrown out the window.
While I might not celebrate Halloween, I do attend (and throw) many costume parties, and I’m all about being conscious of both my reputation and my budget.
If you’re looking for a way to be comfortable and cute in costume without dropping $60 on a too small polyester dress, here are some of my recommendations:
Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
One of the most iconic Hollywood looks also happens to be classy and easy to put together.
Grab one of your favorite little black dresses, and hit up one of those cheap accessories stores in the mall. Add an oversized pearl necklace, some retro shades, and a little tiara, and you’re done!
The Retro Housewife/Pinup.
My undying love for red lipstick has resulted in my fascination with the 1950’s. Whether you’re more I Love Lucy or Dita von Teese, turning yourself into a retro glamour girl is easier than you think.
If you’re anything like me, you probably have quite a few polka dot frocks in your closet. Add a cute apron if you’re going for the housewife, or find a vintage fur stole if you’re leaning more pinup. Grab a bright red lipstick (I love Rimmel’s Kate 001 shade), and watch a few pinup makeup tutorials on Youtube, and you’re done!
This show is one of my [many] guilty pleasures. Channel your inner Fran by embracing lots of leopard and primary colors! Using the black stockings with a bright pump will hone in on that 90’s style, and there are a ton of good tutorials on how to tease your hair to epic proportions.
Also, confession, I started a tradition last year of costumed New Year’s parties. We did Disney for 2012, and we’re planning on I Love the 90’s for 2013! I’m already putting my Nanny costume together!
What about you guys? Do you have any favorite costume inspirations?
